Karuah National Park, NSW
We recently wrapped up a major upgrade of the Little Mountain Road fire trail in Karuah National Park - and we’re proud to say it’s now fully operational and ready for anything. The job involved bringing 5.93km of completely impassable trail back to life.
The trail was split into two sections: a 3.19km Tactical Category 1 trail to the north and a 2.74km Category 9 trail to the south, meeting at Hobart Forest Road. Both were in badshape, with huge water-filled holes, erosion, and overgrowth making the trails only accessible by ATV.
We worked closely with an ecologist to manage sensitive flora and fauna along the way. Threatened plants like Bottlebrushes and hollow-bearing trees were protected with exclusion zones.
Hundreds of frogs and tadpoles were safely relocated following environmental guidelines and advice of our ecologist, and native planting (including Lomandra) was used to stabilise erosion-prone areas.
Client: National Parks & Wildlife Services NSW
Capability: Fire Trail Upgrade
Location: Karuah National Park, NSW
Duration: 4 weeks
5.93km Fire Trail
The FAFT upgrade to Little Mountain Road was completed successfully complying with all relevant guidelines.
A total of 2040 tonne of material was imported to the site to rectify the large holes within the trail network.
The project was completed over 4 weeks due to wet weather delays with on ground works only taking 3 weeks within the period. The project was completed on time and budget and is now future proofed for future fire trail utilisation.
