Little River Fire Trail - Concrete Floodway

Upper Myall, NSW

Overview

BEEP completed the restoration of the 3.55km Little River Fire Trail in Wang Wauk State Forest, a critical access route within the Upper Myall catchment. The trail had become severely degraded, with deep scouring, water damage and dense vegetation rendering it impassable.

Delivered in two distinct phases, the upgrade began with earthworks and trail reconstruction, followed by the installation of a 4mm wide concrete floodway across a frequently inundated creek crossing. The project required close collaboration with an ecologist to manage sensitive environmental areas and ensure all activities met compliance standards.

Scope of Work

 Phase 1 – Trail Restoration

  • 3.55km of fire trail reconstruction
  • Engagement with ecologist for onsite supervision
  • Sediment and erosion control setup
  • Tree clearing and mulching to re-establish the trail corridor
  • Excavation and removal of unsuitable, slumped material
  • Import and placement of 1,300 tonnes of capping and fill
  • Formation of crossfall and trail reshaping
  • Compaction and finishing of trail profile

Phase 2 – Concrete Floodway Construction

  • Excavation and formation of the crossing pad in preparation for pavement construction
  • Supply and installation of 32MPa structural concrete, reinforcement mesh, and vapour barriers
  • Construction of a 4m wide x 45m long concrete causeway slab, built on 34 x Ø450mm concrete piers to rock, spaced at max. 4m centres
  • Installation of multiple Dropped Edge Beams (DEBs) with SL82 mesh top, N12 bottom reinforcement, and 4N16 bars for structural edge containment
  • Integration of expansion joints, isolation joints, and dish drain outlets to meet engineering drainage and movement specifications
  • Scour protection including 500mm deep rock ballast with geotextile underlay to prevent erosion
  • Final slab shaping, tie-in to existing trail surface, and demobilisation following curing and inspection

Summary

The Little River Fire Trail upgrade was completed across two phases: a full trail rebuild followed by concrete floodway installation to improve flood resilience.

A total of 1,300 tonnes of imported material was used during the earthworks, and 65m³ of 32MPa concrete was poured to form the reinforced flood crossing.

The project was delivered over 6 weeks, with 3 weeks of active on-ground work, despite weather interruptions. The result is a durable and compliant access trail ready for firefighting and land management use.
