Swansea Heads Seawall Repair

Swansea Heads, NSW

Overview

BEEP delivered staged seawall remediation works at Swansea Heads, responding to significant washout and storm damage identified along the southern seawall and Lucy’s Groyne.

The project was delivered in two phases, including initial emergency works using surplus armour rock, followed by engineered reconstruction based on coastal design advice from Salients Coastal Engineers. Works were carried out adjacent to sensitive parkland and foreshore assets with careful environmental management and access control throughout.

Scope of Work

  • Stage 1 reconstruction of approx. 40m of seawall using 140 tonnes of recycled igneous rock
  • Excavation and rock placement using 20–22 tonne excavator with hydraulic grab
  • Stage 2 remediation works designed by Salients Engineers to widen and raise 250m of revetment
  • Removal of rubble and placement of geotextile and larger armour rock layers
  • Reinstatement and compaction of wall crest with laser-guided profiling
  • Rock reinstatement at Lucy’s Groyne using 22-tonne excavator for targeted repair
  • 5-tonne excavator used in confined park areas to lock dislodged rock back into wall
  • Import and placement of 720 tonnes of dredged sand from Marks Point to backfill behind wall
  • Site restoration works including fencing repair, turfing (300m²), native planting and seeding
  • Reinstatement of signage, site drainage and follow-up watering for vegetation establishment

Summary

The 15-day construction program restored 290 linear metres of rock revetment, including Lucy’s Groyne and adjoining foreshore areas.

With a combination of staged reconstruction, imported sand backfilling, and full landscaping restoration, the project met all design and environmental specifications. Community feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with park users noting the improved safety, appearance, and resilience of the repaired seawall.
