Terara, NSW
BEEP was engaged by Public Works to undertake critical levee restoration works along the Shoalhaven River at Terara. The project addressed extensive flood damage across multiple Category 2 levee segments, focusing on structural remediation, erosion control, and compliance with modern design standards.
Over 840 lineal metres of levee was rebuilt across 12 dispersed sites in a challenging environment — with ferry-only access to Burraga Island, proximity to sensitive mangrove zones, and limited construction corridors — requiring careful sequencing and environmental oversight.
Client: Public Works NSW
Capability: Rock Revetment / Levee Restoration
Location: Terara, Shoalhaven River, NSW
Duration: 16 weeks
· Vegetation removal and site clearing
· Detailed Excavation of 1,145m³ of degraded levee material to engineers design
· Rebuilding levees with engineered ENM backfill
· Carfeul placement of 875m³ of rock armour to engineering design with 1.2m thick protection layer
· Installation of gravel drainage blanket (200mm thick)
· Coastal geotextile installed beneath armour rock
· Sensitive mangrove removal, transplanting, and reinstatement
· Topsoiling and hydroseeding/turfing of finished banks
· Use of 7–20 tonne excavators and front-end loaders
· Materials ferried via barge and placed with strict sequencing
· Silt booms, haul roads and ESC controls maintained throughout
Delivered over 16 weeks with delays due to weather, the Terara River Levee Restoration project was completed safely, to design, and in full compliance with environmental regulations.
The works restored 840 lineal metres of levee across 12 sites using over 875m³ of armour rock and extensive engineered fill. BEEP’s adaptive approach, environmental stewardship, and logistical planning ensured this complex riverside project improved both flood resilience and ecological integrity for the local community.
